Hub delivers ‘Careers in Quantum Technologies: Communications’ assembly for secondary school students

In an effort to inspire the next generation of quantum technologists and to spread the word regarding the exciting careers available in the field of quantum communications, the Quantum Communications Hub delivered an assembly for secondary schools specifically focused on careers in the field of quantum communications technologies, on Wednesday 18 May 2022.

Hosted by the STEM Ambassador Hub South East England, part of Hub partner STEM Learning, the assembly was able to reach students up and down the country, thanks to its online format, with over 50 schools registered to attend.

The assembly featured a very brief introduction to quantum technologies in general and the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, before three Hub researchers gave inspiring talks about their work and career journeys to date. Speakers were Dr Ross Donaldson of Heriot-Watt University, Dr Catherine Phillips of the University of Sheffield and Dr Jasminder Sidhu of the University of Strathclyde.

It was clear that the presentations given captured the interest of students as they sparked some excellent questions to be asked during the Q&A session. Questions included things like:

“What inspired you to be a researcher?”

“What advice would you give on choosing options for university, in particular to study Quantum Technology?”

“What is the most fun aspect of your research?”

This assembly was the first in a series of assembles on careers in quantum technologies. Other assemblies, which will take place monthly throughout 2022 (apart from during the summer holidays), can be seen below along with registration links.
