Hub Director gives keynote lecture at the ‘Schools’ Physicist of the Year Awards 2020’

Thursday 18th June saw Hub Director, Professor Tim Spiller, give a keynote on lecture on Quantum Technologies at the ‘Schools’ Physicist of the Year Awards 2020’ which was hosted virtually, by the University of York. The awards ceremony, an annual occurrence, is part of a national scheme run and funded by the Ogden Trust, a charitable trust that exists to promote the teaching and learning of physics.

Many worlds flash fiction wins Quantum Shorts competition!

Three short stories that give their characters access to other timelines have claimed prizes in the 2019-20 edition of the Quantum Shorts flash fiction competition. The stories explore the many worlds idea from quantum physics, in which every event is understood to have all possible outcomes, each happening in its own branch of the universe.

Quantum City has joined Twitter!

Quantum City, a multi-partner public engagement initiative funded through the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme, has launched its Twitter feed with the handle @Quantum_City, as of 1 June 2020. The Quantum City Twitter feed aims to appeal to a wide range of audiences: from interested audiences with no technical background to science enthusiasts, and from teachers to young students, who want to find out more about quantum related career pathways. Look out for videos of fun demonstrations, blogs, educational materials and resources, interviews with quantum physicists, interesting reads, event listings & much, much more!

International Quantum Shorts Competition announces finalists!

The Quantum Shorts 2019 flash fiction competition has announced its ten finalists! The annual, international competition, which aims to produce quantum inspired artistic outputs, either short videos (as in the 2018 round) or short stories (as in this round), received over 640 stories – an unprecedented number, submitted by enthusiastic writers all around the world.

New White Paper Published by the National Cyber Security Centre

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has published a new white paper on quantum security technologies, which discusses both quantum key distribution (QKD) and quantum random number generators (QRNGs).

Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics UK 2020

The Quantum Communications Hub was delighted to support the Conference for Undergraduate Women UK 2020 (CUWiP UK) between 12 and 15 March 2020, at the University of York. The conference was attended by over 100 undergraduate students, who identify as women, and had a schedule packed with interesting and inspiring activities.

British Science Week 2020: The Annual Holgate Science Lecture

As part of British Science Week 2020, the Quantum Communication Hub was asked to give a talk to students (aged 11-18) and parents, at the Annual Holgate Science Lecture at the National STEM Learning Centre, York. Hub Investigator, Dr Roger Colbeck, gave the talk which included an introduction to quantum communications and quantum cryptography.
