Our final year report for the first phase of the programme is now published!

Thanks to all the Hub colleagues, partners and collaborators who have contributed to our fifth year report, published today on our website. The report provides a summary of all our achievements over the last five years and outlines future directions for the Hub in the second stage of the national quantum technologies programme.

Hub partner Bristol demonstrates first QKD over 5G network application

Bristol, 3 September 2019

The completion of the UK’s Quantum Network (UKQN) came one step closer earlier this month with the launch of Bristol’s metropolitan quantum network. Establishing the country’s first quantum network to be used as a national testbed facility for the emerging technologies is a major Hub aim, and one that hands the UK a definite competitive advantage in the global quantum race.

Major funding announcement heralds new phase of UK quantum secure communications research and development

The UK Quantum Communications Hub has been awarded further funding of approximately £24M to deliver its vision of integrated quantum secured communications. Funded through the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme as part of a national network of four quantum technology hub consortia, the Quantum Communications Hub is currently completing the first phase of its five-year programme due to finish in November.

Hub partners collaborate to extend the UK’s Quantum Network into the Telecommunications Industry

York, 1 April 2019

Numerous Quantum Communications Hub partners came together last month to celebrate the official launch of the newest UK Quantum Network (UKQN) link – UKQNtel. Taking place across both ends of the link – BT’s Research Labs at Adastral Park and the Cambridge Engineering Department at Cambridge Science Park – the event was jointly organised by the project’s key delivery partners: the Universities of Cambridge and York, and lead industrial partner BT.

Further Investment into Quantum Technologies

Last month the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, announced renewed government investment of £80m (plus £15m for capital equipment) to help further develop quantum technologies as part of the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme. The quantum technologies sector has been identified as a key component of the government’s modern Industrial Strategy.

Quantum Wonderland at New Scientist Live, London, 20-23 September 2018

Over four days in September, the Quantum Communications Hub co-ordinated the presence of the Quantum City public engagement initiative of the national programme at one of UK’s largest science festivals – the New Scientist Live.

Atomic Architects exhibit at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition!

Our Quantum Communications Hub colleague, Professor Brian Gerardot and his ‘Atomic Architects’ team from Heriot-Watt University recently took part in the prestigious Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition which celebrates the cutting edge of UK science. Seven fast-paced but enjoyable days were spent at the Royal Society in London chatting to visitors of all ages about the excitement of atomically thin crystals for discovering new science and making new technologies.

The third annual report is now published!

The third annual report of the Quantum Communications Hub, covering the period 2016-2017, was published earlier this month. The report was compiled with input from across the partnership and covers technical developments across all technology themes as well as content on partnership resource projects, user engagement events, outreach activities and much more.
