Hub job opportunity!

The Institute of Photonics (IPaQS) in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) at Heriot-Watt University seeks to appoint a Research Associate in Quantum Communication Science to work with Prof. Erika Andersson on quantum authentication, funded by the Quantum Communications Hub Partnership Resource Project “QuID – Entanglement-Based Token For Quantum PIN Identification”. The work is theoretical but will take place in collaboration with experimentalists. The position is fixed-term and for 6 months, and the starting date is 1 March 2022 or as soon as possible, by mutual agreement.

The research topic to be investigated is the use of quantum protocols for authentication. This includes benchmarking such protocols against “classical” modern cryptographic protocols, including protocols based on (classical) shared secret keys resulting from standard quantum key distribution. We would like to establish if quantum authentication protocols can give a “quantum advantage”, and exactly in what sense if so. The work will include collaboration with researchers at Heriot-Watt and with other project partners at Sheffield and Bristol universities, and researchers from Duality Quantum Photonics.

Candidates with a PhD and a strong research record in a relevant field of physics, mathematics or computer science are invited to apply. Excellent mathematical and theoretical skills and proven ability to work independently are essential. Desirable criteria are research experience in quantum information science, such as the security of quantum key distribution, and/or in modern cryptography, such as authentication or signature protocols. Preference may be given to candidates who are able to start soon.

The position is full time and is for a fixed term of 6 months.

Closing date: 5 January 2022
